Joan Fitz-Gerald recently resigned her state Senate seat and her leadership position as Senate President to campaign full time to become the next Member of Congress from the Boulder dominated 2nd Congressional district. It sounds like she’s already adopted Pelosi-speak, and is perfectly willing to ignore the facts as reported from the battlefield and adopt the Democrat’s throw-in-the-towel party line.
“The facts on Iraq are clear and have been. We should end the war immediately and bring the troops home.” -State Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald
Today, the New York Times had a feature article documenting the improved security in Baghdad and the return to normal activity in neighborhoods recently ravaged by terrorists. In our November issue, A Line of Sight reported on the Democrat’s blind obsession to attack the President and declare defeat in Iraq even when recent efforts by Iraqi security forces and our troops have yielded reasons to be optimistic about the future – or, at least allow the Surge and our troops the time necessary to complete their mission.
Should Fitz-Gerald become the next representative from the liberal 2nd district, she will no doubt be welcomed with open arms by Nancy Pelosi as one of the San Francisco Speaker’s “true believers.” Unfortunately, should their pull-the-plug-immediately strategy prevail after the 2008 election, they may succeed in bringing the troops home, but almost certainly the war will not come to an end. Multiple experts have predicted that the consequences of premature withdrawal would be severe, including massive loss of life and an expansion, not an end to hostility.
None of that is likely to matter to Fitz-Gerald, though. She doesn’t have to be right to win her primary election battle. She just has to win favor among the Democrats in Boulder. What’s best for America, our troops, and the Middle East will have to wait for another day.
