Dead Man Walking in Oklahoma

Posted on Tuesday 25 March 2008

On Nov. 19, 2007 Zach Dunlap, 21, was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in an accident.  His family stood vigil, but finally agreed to terminate life support and even approved having his vital organs harvested for transplant.   Somebody must not have given Zach a copy of the script – he woke up.

Four months after he was declared dead he appeared with his family on the Today Show.  His father referring to Zach’s brain scan said, “There was no activity at all, no blood flow at all.”

Zach says he’s lost some of his patience and memory, but apparently his cowboy sense of humor is just fine.  “Only the good die young, so I didn’t go,” he says.  He’s also grateful: “Just makes me thankful, makes me thankful that they didn’t give up.”

Zach Dunlap’s amazing story seems particularly poignant during this Easter season as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, and it reminds us who really is in charge of life.
