Mitt Romney: A Completely Class Act

Posted on Thursday 7 February 2008

It has been my privilege to support Mitt Romney’s campaign for the Presidency. Following the results of Super Tuesday it became clear that while mathematically possible, the likelihood of overcoming Senator McCain’s lead was daunting. Furthermore, it would have required a brutally difficult “scorched earth” campaign against McCain – something that I’m certain Romney found unacceptable.

I was proud to support Romney throughout his campaign, and his gracious announcement today at the CPAC meeting in Washington that he was suspending his bid for the Presidency was further evidence of his dignity and character. Click here to see the full text of Gov. Romney’s speech.

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

“If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country.”

Obviously, I have reservations about John McCain or I would have been supporting his campaign. Nonetheless, it now appears the choice for our next President is between John McCain, Hillary Clinton, or Barack Obama. That choice couldn’t be more clear.

As Romney articulated, the issue of Islamic Jihad is overwhelming. So, too, is the issue of Judicial nominations.

I expect a concerted effort by Sen. McCain to calm understandable concerns among conservatives in coming weeks and months. And, I also expect Obama and Clinton to rip each other to shreds as they dance farther to the left scrambling for the Democrat nomination. Advantage GOP and John McCain thanks to the gracious decency of Mitt Romney.
